Long range plan (2012-2015)
1. Collection and Circulation
Paris Carnegie Public Library strives to provide materials that meet the needs of the community.
A. Integrate ebook and e-audiobook purchases into the materials budget while continuing to maintain a strong print collection.
B. Seek cost effective methods of improving return rate of overdue materials.
C. Continue to adjust periodical subscriptions and retention periods to reflect changing usage.
D. Increase DVD purchases and phase out existing videocassettes.
2. Cooperation and Programming
A. Cooperate with Illinois Heartland Library System libraries to provide access to materials through the joint catalog, MyMediaMall, interlibrary loan, and reciprocal borrowing.
B. Cooperate with Friends group to provide book clubs and other programs.
Paris Carnegie Public Library is committed to maintaining its historic building and providing an inviting space for library users.
A. Paint trim/tuckpoint exterior of building.
B. Spruce up restrooms.
C. Repair old magazine storage room so that it can be used for other purposes.
D. Repair plaster and paint as needed.
E. Repairs and upgrades will increase its energy efficiency and sustainability when feasible.
F. Reorganize public and staff areas to increase and improve usable space.
A. Explore grant opportunities and encourage giving to support or enhance building maintenance and library services.
B. Utilize existing financial resources efficiently and effectively.
C. Use green practices (reduce, reuse, recycle) to conserve resources and materials.
D. Work toward a long-term goal of maintaining more consistent service hours throughout the year.
5. Public Relations
In order to best serve the community, residents must be aware of the library and its services.
A. Maintain website and a presence on appropriate social networking sites to provide information about the library, its services, and events.
B. Design a logo to be used on all library cards, sites, brochures, and publicity materials.
C. Promote library services and materials through as many sources as possible, including but not limited to, the local newspaper, brochures and flyers in the library and community, Friends of Paris Public Library, social media, library website, and web-based community calendars.
D. Install a sign identifying the library, with a message area, on the southeast corner of the lawn.
E. Establish a sitting area with benches somewhere on the lawn.
6. Reference and Reader Advisory
Providing accurate reference service and helping readers find materials are a central focus of library service.
A. Provide reference service beyond the library building through telephone, email, and website.
B. Supplement print reference, genealogy, and reader advisory services with online resources.
C. Maintain links to local service websites and authoritative information sites.
D. Purchase back years of local newspaper as funds allow.
E. Continue to label fiction series volumes with series name and number to assist readers in locating books.
A. Provide access to online catalog, databases, and other resources.
B. Cooperate with Illinois Heartland Library System in implementing new Polaris automation system.
C. Offer public computers and Internet access.
D. Maintain an up-to-date web presence that is useful to patrons, staff, and the community.
E. Use technology to enhance services and assist staff with daily library functions.
